Habit tracking

A habit tracker that knows why you slipped

Tick off habits next to the journal that explains them. A standalone tracker records that you missed four days; a habit tracking journal records what you were writing about during the fortnight it fell apart — which is the part you can act on.

01 · The difference

Two records of the same fortnight

Same habit, same fourteen days, same missed run. Both apps put the counter back to zero. Only one of them can tell you anything about the four days in the middle.

One habit · fourteen days

One habit across fourteen days: eight days marked done, then a gap of four days, then two more days done.

A standalone tracker

0

Current streak

  • That four days were missed
  • That the counter is back to zero
  • Nothing about either

It records that you missed four days. Everything it knows about the gap is that it exists.

Compline

0

Current streak

  • Fourteen days of history, intact
  • The entries you wrote during the gap
  • Every one of those days still counted in the analysis

It records what you were writing about while the habit fell apart — which is the part you can act on.

02 · The stance

Streaks are a display, not a scoring system

Most habit apps are built around the streak, and the streak is the thing that kills the habit. Compline keeps streaks because they genuinely motivate some people, and refuses to let one govern anything.

  • The counter resets. Nothing else does.

Breaking a streak loses exactly one thing, and it is the number. Everything the number was standing in for is still there.

  • The history stays whole

Every completion you ever logged is still on record after a gap. A month of real progress is not written off over one missed Tuesday.

  • The analysis uses every day of it

The correlation work reads the whole record, gaps included. Missing a Tuesday does not erase what Compline has learned about your Tuesdays.

  • Nothing calls a gap a failure

No verdict, no broken-chain graphic, no nudge engineered to make one missed day feel like a relapse.

The free plan caps you at three habits and two goals. That is a default rather than a paywall lever — people who start with three still have them in six months far more often than people who start with twelve. Every paid plan lifts both caps entirely.

Three habits, free, forever

Streaks, goals and the whole journal on the Seed plan. Fifteen habits on Bloom, forty on Luminary, unlimited on Constellation — with correlation reports on every paid tier.

03 · Inside the product

What tracking a habit here gets you

Four things, all of which depend on the tick and the writing living on the same screen.

Habits alongside entries

Mark a habit done from the same screen you write on. One surface, one daily ritual, no second app to remember.

Context on every gap

When a streak breaks, the entries from that week are right there. Usually the reason is in them, and usually it is not the one you would have guessed.

Goals over months

Longer-horizon goals that sit above the daily habits, reviewed against what you actually wrote rather than against a checkbox. Two free, unlimited on paid.

04 · The argument

Why pair habits with journaling at all

Because completion data alone cannot answer the only question that matters after a few months: is this habit worth keeping?

A tracker tells you that you meditated on nineteen days in March. It cannot tell you whether March was better for it. Pairing the record with writing — and then letting an AI read across both — is what turns a compliance log into evidence. Some habits will turn out to correlate with nothing at all, and dropping those is as valuable as keeping the rest.

It also fixes the failure mode where habit tracking becomes its own performance. When the tick lives next to a paragraph about how the day actually went, it is harder to spend six months optimising a streak you stopped caring about in week three.

Habit tracking questions

How is this different from a standalone habit tracker?

A standalone tracker records whether you did the thing. Compline records that alongside what you wrote that day, so when a streak breaks you have the context for why — and over months, which habits genuinely move your mood rather than which ones merely feel virtuous.

How many habits can I track?

Three on the free Seed plan, unlimited on every paid plan. Three is a deliberate default rather than an arbitrary limit: people who start with three keep them far more often than people who start with twelve.

Does breaking a streak lose my progress?

No. Streaks are a display, not a scoring system — the underlying history is intact and the correlation analysis uses all of it. Missing a Tuesday does not erase what Compline has learned about your Tuesdays.
